What I Learned During My Account-Based Marketing Internship

Over the past four months, I had an incredible opportunity to work with a startup that is not only special in the industry it operates in (account-based marketing), but I also got the opportunity to meet and get to know some of the most passionate and joyful people I have ever known. I was not sure what to expect at first when I started, as it was a small team that was super close. Luckily for me, they welcomed me like family. The rest was history, I was officially a Terminator! The entire internship was an experience I won’t soon forget and I will forever be grateful to everyone for welcoming me to the business world and showing me how much I have to look forward to when school is over.

This past summer, I interned at Pardot. It was a great opportunity to get started in the B2B marketing and sales world. Towards the end of my first internship, I realized how much I enjoyed being in this industry. Thanks to my connections at Pardot, I was fortunate enough to get a meeting with Sangram Vajre, the CMO and co-founder here at Terminus. Sangram was formerly the Head of Marketing at Pardot.

We met at the Atlanta Tech Village, where Terminus is headquartered. Sangram wanted to know about my goals and career aspirations. I knew I was interested in marketing and sales, plus I like to think I have a bit of the entrepreneurial spirit. That’s when Sangram told me more about the work he was doing at Terminus. Sangram offered me the chance to get experience in both sales and marketing. It was amazing how it all worked out. Our meeting happened in August, and I’ve loved spending the past four months with my crew of “Terminators”.

During the first half of my internship, I did a lot of work supporting sales development with inbound activities. My responsibilities included following up on demo requests, reaching out to people (qualified prospects) who downloaded content to set and schedule appointments for our business development team. I also had the opportunity to collaborate with Nikki Nixon and our marketing team by working in Pardot, setting up campaigns, queuing up content in Twitter, and LinkedIn posts. I really enjoyed working with social media, especially since you can measure the results. For example, one week we saw a 54% increase in re-Tweets.

It wasn’t all work and no play. We have an awesome video game console with more than 50 games.

At a halfway point in my internship, I started doing more outbound sales development activities. I really wanted to get my feet wet with sales to see if it was the right fit for my skill set. It was really cool because when Sangram and I had the initial conversation, I wasn’t surely exactly which direction I wanted to take my career, but I knew I wanted to try sales as well as marketing. I’m thankful I had the opportunity to do both. I wasn’t sure how I would enjoy sales, but I ended up liking it a lot. This was such a great experience, especially being a newcomer to the industry that’s shifting towards account-based marketing.

I’m thankful for my mentors here at Terminus who would teach me how to do something, then hand over the reigns. Sangram has a saying that he gives people “the keys to the Ferrari” then lets them drive it as fast as they can. It’s totally true because it shows how much he trusts me, and I got hands-on experience. While I’m still not sure what my dream job is (because I liked both sales and marketing so much) that’s why I’m excited about account-based marketing because it’s an intersection of both those fields. I would love to continue working in both so I can start evangelizing. Any time you’re able to talk about what you’re passionate about it’s a cool opportunity. It’s a softer side of selling to spread the word and evangelize your work.

All in all, Terminus was an incredibly fulfilling and rewarding experience. I was welcomed into the Terminator family and became one of the gang almost immediately. Even if I could, I wouldn’t change a thing about my time here. This internship is something I will always look back on with fond memories. Who knows? I may even be back after graduation! If anyone out there has tips for someone who is close to graduating or any insight about certain things someone should do upon graduation I would love to hear them!
